The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why did scribes write for centuries without spaces between words if spaces make reading so much easier?

Classical Latin and Greek were written in continuous script: letters in an unbroken run, no gaps, often no punctuation. THELETTERSJUSTKEPTGOING. To a modern reader this is close to unreadable, and the improvement offered by a space is so large and so cheap that its absence looks like an oversight waiting centuries for someone to notice.

That framing is almost certainly wrong. Literate cultures with enormous investment in text did not fail to notice a trivial improvement for hundreds of years. More likely the space was not solving a problem they had — which means their reading was doing something different from ours.

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Start with what a space is for. Its job is word segmentation: telling the eye where one unit ends and the next begins, before the reader knows what the words are. That is a service to a reader who is decoding visually and silently, in a single pass, at speed.

Now ask how ancient reading actually worked. The evidence suggests it was normally done aloud, or at least subvocalised, and often performed — read out to an audience, or by a trained reader to themselves as a kind of performance. And this changes the problem entirely, because speech has no gaps either. Listen to continuous speech and there is no reliable silence between words; the listener segments a continuous stream using rhythm, grammar and expectation. A reader who is converting letters into sound and then understanding the sound is doing exactly what a listener does, and continuous script is no obstacle to that, because the segmentation happens downstream of the letters.

So continuous script was not a defective form of what we do. It was a well-matched form of what they did: a script that records the sound stream, for a reader who processes it as a sound stream.

There is a second half, though, and it is about who was reading and in what language. A native speaker of Latin reading Latin aloud has a huge advantage: they know the word stock, so the segmentation comes free from familiarity, the way you can follow a language you speak in a noisy room. The reader for whom continuous script is punishing is one who does not have that fluency — who is reading a language learned from books rather than acquired from speech.

That points at where the change should come from, and it is where it did come from. Word separation was developed and spread most decisively by scribes in early medieval Ireland and Britain, working in Latin as a foreign, learned language. They had the exact problem that spaces solve, and they solved it. Note what this predicts and gets right: the innovation appears where the difficulty was greatest, not where the literacy was densest.

Then a self-reinforcing loop takes over. Separated script makes it possible to read silently and quickly, because the eye can take words as units without routing through sound. Silent reading in turn makes separation more valuable, since a silent reader has nothing but the visual layout to segment with. And silent reading has consequences of its own — private study, reference consultation, the ability to skim and search, the reader who reads faster than anyone can speak. Those changes made further conventions worth having: punctuation, paragraphing, capitals, running heads, eventually indexes.

So the space is not a small typographic improvement that arrived late. It is the entry point to a different mode of reading, and it arrived when a population appeared for whom the old mode did not work.

Think of a road with no lane markings, in a place where traffic is light, slow, and everybody knows the route.

Markings would be no help; drivers negotiate by eye and by custom, and the road works. Now bring in traffic that is faster, denser, and driven by people who do not know the road. Suddenly lines are worth painting — not because someone finally thought of paint, but because the conditions that make lines valuable have arrived.

And then a second thing happens: once the lines are there, driving changes. Speeds rise, because a driver can hold a lane without negotiating. The marking made a new behaviour possible, and that behaviour makes the marking indispensable.

WHERE IT BREAKS DOWN

Lane markings are added to an existing road without changing it, whereas word separation changed the text itself and, over time, what texts were written for — a reference work assuming a silent consulting reader is a different kind of object from a text meant to be performed, which the road analogy has no room for.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

"Ancient reading was always aloud" is too strong, and the strong version has been argued down. The evidence for reading aloud as the norm is good, but silent reading was not unknown, and the famous anecdote often used to prove it was extraordinary is thinner evidence than its fame suggests. The defensible claim is about the default and about what the script was optimised for, not about an absolute rule.

The causal direction between separation and silent reading is genuinely contested. The account above has separation enabling silent reading, and that is the position most associated with the palaeographic literature on this question. But the two plainly reinforce each other, and a case can be made that changing reading practices created demand for separation rather than the reverse. I do not think the evidence cleanly settles which moved first, and anyone presenting it as settled is overstating.

Continuous script was not universal and separation was not new. Some earlier scripts and some inscriptions used separators — points, marks, spacing — and the practice appeared and lapsed. This matters because it shows the idea was available and was dropped, which is much stronger evidence for the functional account than a story about nobody having thought of it. A convention that keeps being invented and abandoned is one whose value depends on conditions.

Not every writing system needs it. Modern Chinese and Japanese are written without spaces and are read fluently at speed, because other features — character boundaries, script alternation, morphology — do the segmenting. That is the cleanest available check on the claim that spaces are a universal improvement: they are not, they are a solution to a particular segmentation problem that some systems solve otherwise.

The falsification test. If separation was driven by readers lacking native fluency in the written language, then it should appear earliest and most consistently in communities writing a learned second language, and later in communities writing their own vernacular. If separation had spread first and fastest among native-speaking scribal centres, with foreign-language scriptoria adopting it late, the account would be wrong and the explanation would have to be about materials, script forms, or fashion instead.

Scribes were not failing to notice a cheap improvement. Continuous script suited a practice of reading that converted letters to sound and segmented by ear, exactly as listeners segment speech, and for a reader fluent in the language it cost little. Spaces arrived when readers appeared for whom that no longer worked — and once present, they made a faster, silent, visual kind of reading possible, which is what made them permanent. The convention did not improve reading so much as change what reading was.
