The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why do twins begin talking later than single-born children despite growing up amid more speech?

A twin household is noisier than a singleton household. More words are spoken in it per hour, more turns are taken, and there is a same-age conversational partner permanently in the room. If language came from exposure to language, twins ought to be ahead.

On average, in early childhood, they are behind. Not dramatically, and mostly not permanently — but reliably enough that it is a recognised pattern rather than an anecdote. So either the exposure account is wrong, or the thing being exposed to is not what we thought it was. Which is it?

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Start by refusing to accept the puzzle at face value, because the first candidate explanation is not about speech at all. Twins are far more likely than singletons to be born preterm and at low birth weight, and both of those independently predict slower early language. If that is doing the work, "twin" is not a cause here — it is a marker for a birth history, and a preterm singleton should look much the same. That is a real and separable prediction, and the honest position is that some of the gap does sit here. Any comparison that does not hold gestational age and birth weight fixed is not measuring twinness.

Now suppose we have matched on all that and a gap remains. What is left? Ask what a caregiver actually supplies. Not words in the air — those are cheap and, as we will see in a moment, largely inert for a toddler. What she supplies is episodes of shared attention: she looks where the child is looking, names the thing the child is already interested in, waits, and responds to what the child does next. That is a two-person good. It cannot be delivered to two children at once, because its whole value is that it is tuned to this child's current attention.

So the resource is not speech volume. It is dyadic time — and dyadic time is rival. One caregiver, two infants, the same waking hours: whatever each twin's share is, it is not what a singleton gets. Meanwhile the household's total word count goes up, which is precisely why the raw exposure measure points the wrong way.

There is a second, subtler cost. When an adult addresses both twins at once, the utterance has to work for two children who are not attending to the same thing. What survives that constraint is more generic and less contingent on either child's immediate act. Triadic talk is not half of dyadic talk; it is a different and weaker input.

Does the account make a testable prediction? Yes, and a sharp one. If dilution of one-to-one attention is the mechanism, the delay should scale with the degree of dilution: triplets should be further behind than twins, and twins in households with more adults per child should be less affected. The direction of that gradient is what the mechanism stands or falls on.

What would refute it? Two observations. If twins matched to singletons on gestational age, birth weight and measured child-directed speech per child still lagged, then dyadic time is not what is missing and something about twinness itself is. And if triplets showed no more delay than twins, the dose-response leg of the argument is gone.

One popular explanation deserves to be set aside. Twins are often said to invent a private language that displaces the shared one. Genuine idioglossia is rare; what is usually observed is two children reinforcing each other's immature pronunciations of ordinary words, which is a symptom of the delay rather than its cause.

Think of two apprentices in a workshop with one master. The workshop is full of activity all day — more hammering, more talk, more to watch than a one-apprentice shop has. But the thing that actually teaches is the master standing at your elbow, watching your hands, and correcting that cut. There is only one master, and his elbow-time is halved. The apprentice in the quieter shop, who has all of it, learns faster despite the quiet.

Apprentices know they are being taught and can queue for the master's attention; infants cannot, and the shortfall is invisible to everyone including the caregiver. And an apprentice who misses a lesson can be shown it later, whereas the input at issue here is valuable partly because it is timed to a moment of the child's own interest, which does not wait.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

Two clarifications hold the reasoning together.

The first is what "input" means. It is easy to read this piece as saying twins hear less, which is false — they hear more. The claim is that the effective input is the subset that is addressed to the child and contingent on what the child is doing, and that this subset is what gets divided. That distinction is the whole argument, and it is developed on its own terms in the companion piece on overheard speech; the fixed point of difference is that the companion piece asks why ambient talk fails to substitute for directed talk, while this one takes that as given and asks what happens when the directed supply is halved.

The second is about causal inference, and it matters more than the mechanism. Families with twins differ from families without them — in maternal age, in fertility treatment history, in household composition, in income strain. Any raw twin-versus-singleton comparison confounds all of it with the thing we want to measure. The design that does better is a within-family one: compare twins with their own singleton siblings, which holds the household constant. Where such comparisons and gestational-age matching have been done, the twin gap in early language shrinks substantially — which is exactly why the residual is worth arguing about rather than assuming.

And the necessary caution: everything above is a population average across many children, and it forecasts nothing about any particular pair. Twin language differences in this range are typically modest and typically close as children get older; a description of an average trajectory is not a claim about a child, and not a claim about anything a parent did or should do.

The paradox dissolves once "exposure" is defined properly. Twins are exposed to more language and less teaching, because the teaching unit is a shared-attention episode between one adult and one child, and that unit does not scale. A good part of the observed gap is not about that at all but about being born early and small, which travels with twinning and must be held fixed before anything else is claimed. What remains is a story about a rival resource being divided — testable by whether the delay grows with the number of children sharing the same adult.
