The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why do so many unrelated societies forbid marriage within a person's own group?

Societies that never met each other, on different continents and with no shared history, arrived at rules of the same shape: you may not marry within your own clan, lineage, or half of the village. The obvious explanation is that they all noticed the same biological danger. But notice how strong that claim is — it requires people without genetics to have inferred an effect visible only across many births. Before accepting it, ask what the rules actually forbid, and whether the pattern matches the biology at all.

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Start with the biology, because it is real. Each of us carries recessive alleles that would be harmful if paired with a copy of themselves. With unrelated parents, the chance of the same rare variant arriving from both sides is small. With related parents, who inherited from shared ancestors, it rises — and the closer the relationship, the more. That is inbreeding depression, and for parent-offspring or sibling pairings the effect is severe.

Now hold the magnitude honestly, because the folk version is badly inflated. For first cousins — the case people usually have in mind — careful reviews put the additional risk of a serious congenital disorder at roughly two percentage points above a baseline of two or three in the general population. That is a real increase, worth a genetic counsellor's time, and nothing like the catastrophe of popular imagination. Cousin marriage is also neither rare nor exotic: something on the order of one marriage in ten worldwide is between second cousins or closer, and in many regions it is the preferred form.

Which is where the biological explanation comes apart as an account of the rules. Exogamy rules typically forbid marriage within a named descent group, which in a large clan means thousands of people whose common ancestor is many generations back — individuals barely more related to each other than to strangers. And many of the same systems positively prescribe marrying a cross-cousin, the child of your mother's brother or father's sister. Here is the decisive observation: a cross-cousin and a parallel cousin — the child of your father's brother — are equally related to you. Numerous societies permit or require one and treat the other as incest. No account built on shared genes can distinguish them, because genetically there is nothing to distinguish.

So the rule is tracking something else. What?

Ask what a marriage does beyond producing children. It creates a permanent tie between two families who now share descendants, obligations, and reasons not to fight. Edward Tylor put the point bluntly in 1889: a group must either marry out or be killed out. A society of small groups that marry only within themselves is a set of isolated units; one that must send members out is a network in which every group is bound to several others.

Claude Lévi-Strauss built this into a full theory in 1949, and his inversion is the useful part: the incest prohibition is less a rule against marrying in than an obligation to give away. A person renounced by their own group becomes a gift, and a gift demands a return — so marriage rules are systems of exchange. Where two groups swap directly, the alliance is closed and reciprocal. Where group A gives to B, B to C, and C back to A, the chain binds many groups into a circuit no pair could sustain alone — exactly the structure a cross-cousin rule generates and a parallel-cousin rule does not.

Think of family firms deciding whether to hire only relatives or only outsiders. Hiring in keeps everything familiar and loses nothing today; hiring out plants a person in each of the other firms and receives one back, so within a generation every firm has standing relationships and reasons to settle disputes rather than escalate. The firms that hired out are not better at business — they are simply harder to isolate.

WHERE IT BREAKS DOWN

A firm's hire can be reversed and carries no genes, whereas a marriage is durable and its children carry the biological consequence too — which is why the biological and the social pressures here really are both operating, rather than one being a dressed-up version of the other.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

The temptation is to declare a winner. The better reading is that two mechanisms operate at different levels and on different targets.

Selection acts on close pairings, where the genetic cost is large. It plausibly explains the near-universal horror of parent-child and sibling marriage — and it may not even need a rule to do it. Westermarck's proposal, that people raised in close proximity through early childhood develop a sexual aversion to each other, has real support: studies of Israeli kibbutzim found almost no marriages between peers reared together, and Arthur Wolf's work on Taiwanese "minor marriages", where a girl was raised in her future husband's household, found those unions had markedly lower fertility and higher divorce. If avoidance is already produced by upbringing, the rule is doing something else.

Alliance theory explains the rest — the reach of the prohibition far beyond biological kin, the asymmetry between cousin types, and the fact that the rules follow social categories rather than genealogical distance.

Two honest caveats. Lévi-Strauss's framework is not consensus: it has been criticised for treating women as objects of exchange rather than agents, and for a functionalism that is hard to falsify — if any rule can be shown to bind groups together, the theory risks explaining everything. And the biological side is routinely overstated, with a modest elevation in risk reported as a certainty of harm. Stating the size of the effect accurately is part of taking it seriously.

Two different forces have been folded into one story. Inbreeding depression is genuine, but its weight falls on the closest pairings, its magnitude at cousin level is modest, and it cannot explain rules forbidding distant clan members while permitting cousins. The prohibitions are better read as an obligation to give away, converting a scatter of self-contained groups into a web of allied ones. Both are true at once — and the same shape appears on different continents because both pressures were everywhere, not because everyone made the same inference about genes.
