The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why do teams win more often at home, in every sport anyone has measured?

Home teams win more than half the time in football, basketball, cricket, handball, rugby and ice hockey, in professional leagues and amateur ones, across a century of records. An effect that survives that much variation in rules, geography and culture is not a quirk. So what is the same in all those settings — and can we find a way to test it rather than just assert it?

Reasoning it through

List the candidates first, because the interesting work is eliminating them. The away side travelled and may be tired. The home side knows the pitch, the light, the bounce of the boards. The home crowd lifts its own players. The home crowd leans on the referee. And there is a folk explanation about territoriality and testosterone.

Now try to separate them, which is the whole difficulty: in an ordinary fixture all five arrive together. Can you think of a situation where one is removed and the rest stay?

Travel comes apart most easily. If fatigue were doing the work, advantage should scale with distance, and mostly it does not — two clubs in the same city, each playing a bus ride from home, still show the effect. Long-haul travel across time zones does measurably hurt, but that is a different and narrower claim than home advantage in a compact national league.

Familiarity is harder to dismiss but behaves oddly. It should be largest where venues differ most, and there are sports where it plainly matters — a cricket ground's pitch preparation, a baseball park's dimensions. Yet the effect persists in sports played on standardised surfaces of identical dimensions everywhere. So familiarity contributes somewhere and cannot be the general answer.

Which leaves the crowd, and a question worth pausing on: on whom does a crowd act? The natural answer is the players. But a player's performance is mostly practised motor skill, hard to improve on demand by being shouted at. The referee's job, by contrast, is a stream of split-second judgements on genuinely ambiguous events — was that a foul, was the contact enough, how much time to add — made by a person standing inside the noise. Ambiguity is exactly where social pressure has room to move something.

That is a testable claim, and it has been tested. Show qualified referees video of the same challenges, once with the original crowd noise and once silenced, and their decisions shift: with the noise, they penalise the home side less. Study injury time in league football and the amount added tracks which side is behind, with more time when the home team needs a goal. Neither result requires anyone to be corrupt. They are what you would expect from a human making fast calls while several thousand people register displeasure in real time.

Then the pandemic handed sport a natural experiment nobody could have run deliberately: matches played in the same stadiums, after the same journeys, on the same familiar pitches, with no spectators at all. If the crowd is the channel, home advantage should fall. It did — not to zero, and not uniformly across every league, but it fell, and the single clearest change was disciplinary: away teams stopped collecting the excess cards they had always collected. The channel that weakened was the officiating one.

Think of a judge at a village show, tasting cakes with the bakers' families packed around the table. The clearly bad entry still loses and the clearly brilliant one still wins. But on the three or four entries that are genuinely close, the audible intake of breath when the judge reaches toward the outsider's plate does something — and the judge would sincerely deny it.

the cake judge makes a handful of decisions at leisure and can reconsider. A referee makes hundreds in seconds each, with no chance to revisit any of them, so the mechanism is not one dramatic capitulation but the accumulation of many small tilts across ninety minutes, none of which would look wrong on its own.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

Three refinements, and one thing to put down.

The refinement that matters most is that word accumulation. Home advantage is not a large effect applied once. It is a marginal shift in the distribution of close calls, repeated often enough that it shows up in league tables — which is why it is invisible in any single match and undeniable across ten thousand.

Second, the empty-stadium evidence is the strongest we have, but it is not clean. The seasons in question were disrupted in many other ways at once — condensed fixtures, unusual substitution rules, players in and out of isolation — and the results varied by league, with some showing large drops and some very little. The honest summary is that crowd influence on officials is the best-supported single channel, not the only one and not a settled quantity.

Third, familiarity and travel are real but secondary. They should be expected to dominate in the specific places you would predict: intercontinental fixtures, and sports where the venue itself varies.

And the thing to put down: the territorial-hormone story, in which players defending home ground show a testosterone surge. It circulates widely and rests on small studies that have not held up well. It is not needed to explain anything here, and leaning on it costs you a mechanism you can actually test in exchange for one you cannot.

Home advantage is real, consistent, and mostly not about the players. It works through the one part of a match that is genuinely undetermined — the official's judgement of close events — and it works by accumulation, shifting a great many small calls by a little rather than any one call by a lot. The empty stadiums of 2020 gave the cleanest look anyone has had at it, and what shrank was not the home team's running or shooting but the away team's card count.
