The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why does making every point on a frontier strong leave the whole frontier weak?

A commander is given a frontier and an army, and told to hold the frontier. The instinct is arithmetic and it feels responsible: measure the frontage, divide by the troops, and post them evenly, so that no stretch is left uncovered. Frederick the Great's verdict on that instinct was blunt — he who defends everything defends nothing.

That is a paradox as stated, so it deserves an actual reason rather than admiration. If every point is covered, how can the line as a whole be weaker than one where large stretches are deliberately left thin?

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Begin with the constraint that does all the work, and notice that it is a conservation law rather than a piece of doctrine. The army is finite. Whatever strength stands at one point is strength that is not standing anywhere else. There is no allocation that makes every sector strong, only allocations that distribute a fixed total. So the real question is never "is this point defended?" but "against what, and at whose choosing?"

That second clause is the pivot. Who decides where the blow falls? Not the defender. The attacker looks at the whole line, picks his moment and his place, and brings the bulk of his force to it. So compare the two sides at the point that will actually matter. The defender has one frontage's worth of troops there — his even share. The attacker has, potentially, his entire army there. Even distribution therefore does not produce a line that is strong everywhere; it produces a line that is guaranteed to be locally outnumbered wherever the enemy chooses to press, and simultaneously has surplus troops standing idle along every stretch he chose not to press.

Ask what that surplus is worth. Nothing, on the day. Troops holding quiet ground are not merely underused — their strength has been converted into a form that cannot be recovered in time. That is the sharpest version of the point: an even defence does not lose because it is thin, it loses because most of its strength has been spent buying insurance against attacks that did not occur.

So what is the alternative? Turn the arithmetic around. Decide in advance where the decisive result must be achieved, put the mass there, and then deliberately accept risk everywhere else — posting the minimum needed to observe, delay, and report rather than the amount needed to hold. This is exactly what the doctrinal principle called economy of force means. It is easy to misread it as thrift, as though the point were to use less. It is the opposite: it is the discipline of taking a calculated shortfall in secondary places precisely so that the primary place can be overwhelming. Modern army doctrine pairs it with the principle of mass for that reason — the two are one idea seen from either end.

There is a further reason concentration pays more than the ledger suggests, though it should be quoted carefully. Lanchester's model of aimed-fire combat implies that effectiveness scales with the square of numbers, so a force that fights at two-to-one twice is far better off than the same force fighting evenly twice. That is an idealisation, and it assumes conditions — perfect fire distribution, no terrain, no morale — that never hold. It is best treated as a reason to expect the advantage of concentration to be superlinear, not as a number to plan by.

And the thin sectors? They are not abandoned; they are given a different task. A screen that detects and delays does not need to defeat anything — it needs to buy the hours in which a mobile reserve can be moved to the threatened point. Which reveals what an even defence really surrendered: not just local strength, but the reserve itself, and with it the ability to respond to the attacker's choice at all.

Think of a household budget stretched across every room of a house that needs work. Split evenly, each room gets a fresh coat of paint and none gets the roof repaired — and when the rain comes, the money is gone and the house is still not weathertight. The spending was not wasted in the sense of being stolen; it was spent in a form that could not be recovered when the one thing that mattered arrived.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

Three refinements are worth carrying.

First, on the term itself. Clausewitz used economy of force in a related but not identical sense — his emphasis was that no part of the force should stand idle, which is the same conservation instinct arriving from a different direction. The crisp doctrinal definition as minimum essential combat power to secondary efforts is a later, chiefly twentieth-century formulation. Anyone treating the two as interchangeable is flattening a real difference.

Second, this is not an argument that thin is always better. If the attacker cannot concentrate — because the terrain forbids it, or because he genuinely does not know where to go, or because he is himself dispersed by a raiding campaign — then the case for a deliberate weak sector shrinks. The principle depends on the attacker holding the initiative. Take that away and the arithmetic changes.

Third, and most practically, the accepted risk must be accepted, not discovered. The failures of frontier defence in history are rarely failures of the concept and usually failures of nerve or of nerve's opposite: a thin sector nobody had decided to be thin, or a reserve committed early to a feint and unavailable when the real blow landed. The principle prescribes where to be weak on purpose; it does not excuse being weak by accident.

The frontier is weak when defended everywhere for the same reason a fixed sum cannot buy two things: strength is conserved, and spreading it evenly converts almost all of it into cover for attacks that never come. The attacker chooses the point, so the defender's only real lever is choosing where to be deliberately weak — and choosing it before the enemy does.
