Drypoint burr
A Socratic walk-through of the drypoint burr — reasoned out one step at a time, not lectured.
The question we started with
THE QUESTION #Why is the tenth impression from a drypoint plate worth a fraction of the first when nobody altered the plate?
A printing plate is metal with an image cut into it, and inking, wiping and printing are gentle enough that an engraved copperplate can yield hundreds of impressions a specialist has trouble telling apart. So the natural expectation is that impressions from one plate are copies of each other, and that numbering is bookkeeping rather than a claim about quality.
For drypoint that collapses within a single afternoon at the press. The first impressions are deep and velvety; by the fortieth the same lines are thin and grey. Nobody retouched the plate, no acid went near it, and every impression was pulled by the same printer with the same ink. Something is being used up — and it is not the image, because the image is still there.
Reasoning it through
REASONING #Begin with how intaglio printing works, because the ink is not where intuition puts it. Ink is forced into the plate's recesses and the surface is then wiped clean, so what prints is what sits below the surface; damp paper driven into those recesses by a roller press lifts it out. Anything that can hold ink under wiping prints; anything that cannot, does not.
Now compare three ways of making the recesses. An engraver's burin cuts a V-groove and removes the metal as a curling sliver, anything raised at the edges being scraped away. Etching dissolves a groove with acid, raising nothing. A drypoint needle does neither: dragged hard across bare copper, it ploughs, and the metal it displaces is not removed but pushed up into a ragged ridge along the line — the burr.
Ask what the burr does at the press. Its underside and base form an irregular, undercut trap. A wiping cloth cleans the flat surface and the top of the ridge but cannot reach into that shelter, so a substantial quantity of ink survives the wipe there — more, in a rich drypoint, than the furrow itself holds. It transfers as a soft, dark, slightly diffuse edge alongside the line: the whole reason anyone uses drypoint, and a black an engraved line cannot produce because it has no burr left.
And the answer falls out. The furrow is a hole in the metal, and holes are durable — nothing at the press can fill one in. The burr is a thin unsupported fin of soft copper standing above the surface, exposed to the two most violent things that happen in printing: every wipe drags across it and folds it over, and every pull of the press crushes it under paper and blankets at full pressure. It bends, compacts and work-hardens flat, and once it is lying down its shelter is gone.
Notice the shape of that prediction. The decline is not a uniform fading, as general wear would give, but the selective loss of one component while the other survives intact — so a late impression does not look like a faint early one. It looks like a weak engraving, which is precisely what is left when only the ploughed furrow prints.
That gives a decisive test, essentially the one connoisseurs use. Take a plate carrying both etched and drypoint passages — a common combination — and set an early impression beside a late one. The account predicts the drypoint passages lose density dramatically while the etched lines print essentially unchanged. If everything faded together, the cause would be general plate wear; if the difference reversed between sessions, the printer's wiping. Neither happens: the loss is specific, monotonic and permanent.
A second test comes from the workaround: electroplating a thin hard skin over the copper — steelfacing, adopted in the nineteenth century — should extend the useful run substantially if fragility is the mechanism. It does, which is why it became standard for editioning.
How many good impressions is that? Fewer than people expect, and the figures usually quoted — a few dozen at best — are craft rules of thumb, varying with the metal, the ploughing, the wiping and the pressure. I would not lean on a specific number, nor on any figure for what early states fetch.
The analogy
THE ANALOGY #Think of the pile on a new carpet. It stands up, catches the light and shows the colour deeply. Walk one line across it forty times and that path goes pale and grey while the rest is untouched — and not a fibre has been removed. The backing is intact; what changed is that a raised, unsupported thing has been pressed flat.
crushed pile can often be raised again with steam or a brush, whereas the burr is displaced metal folded over and work-hardened, so nothing restores it — and re-ploughing the line to raise a fresh burr does not repair the plate, it creates a different state of it.
Clarifying the model
THE MODEL #The first is that the burr is not a by-product the artist tolerates; it is the material the artist draws with, which changes what "the plate" means. In etching the plate is the image and impressions are readings of it. In drypoint the plate carries a resource each printing consumes, so impressions form a sequence rather than a set, and the intended image may exist only in the first few.
The second is that the states a cataloguer numbers are not this. A change of state means the artist altered the plate, so states are discrete and deliberate, whereas burr loss is continuous, involuntary, and happens within a state. An early impression of the third state is therefore two independent claims: which version of the image, and how far into the burr's life.
The third separates the physical from the conventional, because both run here and it is easy to credit one for the other. The physical part is directly visible: an early impression carries more ink, laid down differently, and a viewer with two sheets side by side can see it unprompted. The conventional part is the market's machinery around that fact — numbering, provenance, the premium for a low number — which does genuine work but is not the difference itself, and gets applied where no difference exists, as in media that print identically every time. What became clearer
WHAT CLEARED #Drypoint is the one intaglio technique whose ink is held mostly by something standing above the plate rather than cut into it, and things standing above a plate do not survive a roller press. So the plate is not a stable original that impressions copy; it is a consumable, and each pull spends a little of what makes the print worth having. The furrow beneath is permanent, which is why the decline reads as a change of technique rather than a fading — and why the gap between the first impression and the fortieth is a physical fact, not only a story about numbering.
