The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why can every neighbouring pair of villages understand each other when the chain's two ends cannot?

Walk from the North Sea coast of the Netherlands into Germany, stopping at every village, and at no point will you cross a line where the speech changes from Dutch to German. Each village understands its neighbours easily. Yet the speech at the two ends of that walk is mutually unintelligible, and we call one end Dutch and the other German.

This should feel like a contradiction. "Understands" seems like the sort of relation that ought to carry along a chain: if A understands B and B understands C, surely A understands C. The whole puzzle of a dialect continuum is that this reasonable-sounding transfer is false, and the reason it is false turns out to be the same reason the continuum exists at all.

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Start with what happens in a single village. Speech there is not static — pronunciations shift, a word narrows its meaning, a verb ending erodes. These innovations mostly begin locally and spread outward through everyday contact, and their spread thins with distance, because contact thins with distance. So each innovation ends up covering some patch of the map, and the edge of that patch is a line: an isogloss.

Now ask what the map looks like after centuries of this. Not one line but hundreds, each drawn by a different innovation, each with its own edge in its own place. Between any two adjacent villages, only a handful of those lines happen to fall. That handful is the difference between them — a couple of vowels, an ending, some vocabulary. Trivially small. Mutual intelligibility survives it with room to spare.

Here is the step that resolves everything. Ask what the difference is between village A and village D, three hops along. It is not the difference of one hop; it is the sum of the three hops' differences, because the lines that fell between A and B are still separating A from D, and so are the ones that fell between B and C, and between C and D. Differences accumulate along the chain while intelligibility does not. Each step spends a little of a budget that is never replenished.

And intelligibility is not a quantity that shrinks gently in proportion — it holds up rather well until the accumulated difference passes some rough threshold, at which point comprehension collapses fairly quickly. So a relation that behaves like "difference below a threshold" is precisely the kind of relation that fails to be transitive: A-to-B is under the line, B-to-C is under the line, and A-to-C is over it. There is no contradiction, only an arithmetic fact about summing small numbers.

Two observations follow that are worth checking against the map. First, isoglosses need not run parallel, and where several bundle together you get a sharper boundary — the Rhenish fan is the standard case, where the lines separating northern maken from southern machen and its companions splay apart along the Rhine instead of stacking neatly. Where they do bundle tightly, dialectologists get something that feels like a real border; where they splay, no border exists to be found.

Second, notice what this says about the words language and dialect. If the chain is smooth, no linguistic criterion picks out the cut. The cut we actually use is political and cultural: which standard the schools teach, which state issues the passports, which written form the newspapers use. Heinz Kloss's distinction is useful here — Abstand languages are separated by sheer linguistic distance, Ausbau languages by having been developed and standardised apart. Dutch and German at the border are Ausbau: separated by construction, not by distance. Meanwhile the Arabic vernaculars form a continuum whose ends are as far apart as Romance varieties are, yet are conventionally called one language, because a shared written standard and identity do the naming.

One honest qualification: many of these continua no longer exist as walkable chains. Universal schooling in a standard, mass media and internal migration have levelled the intermediate varieties, so the Dutch-German transition among younger speakers today is far more of a step than it was a century ago. The continuum is a historical outcome that state standardisation actively erases.

Think of shades on a paint chart, arranged in a long strip from yellow to red. Hold any two adjacent chips side by side and most people cannot see a difference at all; the step is below the eye's threshold. Take the first chip and the fiftieth and nobody would call them the same colour. Where is the boundary between yellow and orange? There is not one on the strip — the boundary is a word we impose, and the only thing actually present is a sequence of steps too small to see, added up.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

The trap is to treat "mutual intelligibility" as a crisp property of a pair of varieties. It is neither symmetric nor stable: Danes typically understand spoken Norwegian better than Norwegians understand spoken Danish, and exposure, motivation, topic and even goodwill shift the outcome substantially. So the threshold in the reasoning above is real but fuzzy, and any single percentage figure for it should be read as a convention of whoever ran the test.

It also helps to see that a continuum is a spatial record of an accumulative historical process. The same accumulation running in time rather than space is how related languages separate: small changes, each locally invisible, summing until the ends no longer meet. Geography just lets you see the whole gradient at once instead of having to reconstruct it.
