The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why do the children of speakers with no shared grammar end up with a fully regular one?

Put adults with no language in common on a plantation and they will improvise something: words taken mostly from the language of whoever holds the whip, strung together with whatever word order each speaker's first language suggests. It works for cargo and orders. It has no consistent way to mark tense and no settled way to say the man who sold me this.

Now let children grow up hearing that. The obvious prediction is that they inherit the mess — perhaps a slightly tidier mess. What is observed instead, in case after case, is a language with a fixed word order, a stable set of grammatical markers, and every device a language needs. Where did the structure come from, if it was not in the input?

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

The first move is to be precise about what is missing. A pidgin is not a small language; it is a language-shaped gap. Its vocabulary comes overwhelmingly from one source — the lexifier — while its grammar comes from nowhere in particular, which is the same as saying different speakers use different grammars and none of them is obligatory. Ask a pidgin speaker to say whether an event is finished, and they will manage, lexically, with a word like finish. Ask two speakers and you may get two strategies.

So the interesting question is not where the words came from. It is where the obligation came from — the point at which a marker stops being optional and starts being required.

Here the useful evidence is not historical at all but experimental. Give adults an artificial miniature language in which a grammatical marker appears unpredictably, on some fraction of the nouns, and adults reproduce that inconsistency faithfully: they probability-match, producing it at roughly the rate they heard. Give the same input to young children and they regularise instead, driving the marker toward all or nothing. Hudson Kam and Newport's experiments are the clean demonstration, and it is the mechanism the whole puzzle turns on. Children are not better learners here; they are worse copiers, and the errors run in one direction.

Follow that through a generation. Adults hearing variable input transmit variable output. Children hearing variable input transmit less variable output. Repeat, and a system with no consistent rule acquires one — not because anyone chose it, but because the transmission channel has a bias. The grammar that emerges is whichever option the regularising happened to seize on, which is why creoles with different substrate populations settle on different specifics while sharing the property of having settled.

Does the same thing happen where we can watch it? Nicaraguan Sign Language is the cleanest observation: successive cohorts of deaf children took the previous cohort's variable system as input and returned something more systematic, with devices their models did not consistently use. That case is discussed at more length in this collection's piece on sign language; the point to carry across is that regularisation was measured cohort by cohort, not reconstructed from documents.

The refuting observation. The child-driven account makes a dated prediction: the regular features should appear when a locally-born generation appears, and not before. Archival work on Hawai'i — Bickerton's original showcase — has pressed exactly there, and Sarah Roberts' recovery of earlier plantation texts indicates several supposedly creole features were already in adult use before the relevant native generation. If that holds, then for Hawai'i the regularity was assembled gradually by adult speakers, and children finished a job they did not start. That is a live dispute, not a settled one, and any account that cannot be embarrassed by a dated text is not doing work.

Think of a rumour passed down a line where each person must repeat it in a full sentence. The first speakers heard something ragged and pass on something ragged. But a listener who cannot hold the raggedness — who must commit to one version to say it at all — passes on something crisper than what they received. Nobody edits; the channel does the editing, and it only edits one way.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

Three refinements, and one belief to name as false.

The false one first, because it poisons the rest: a creole is not simplified, broken, or a corrupted version of its lexifier. That claim is prescriptive dressed as structural. Haitian Creole is not bad French; it is a language whose words are mostly French-derived and whose grammar is not French. The confusion arises because the pidgin stage genuinely is reduced, and the label gets transferred to the thing that grew out of it.

Second, "regular" needs care. Creoles do tend to mark tense, mood and aspect with separate preverbal particles rather than fused endings, and Bickerton read that recurrence as evidence of an innate default — the language bioprogram. The alternative reading is that particles are simply what you get when adult second-language learners transmit a system: fused morphology is the first thing to go in imperfect learning and the last thing to be reinvented. Both accounts predict the same surface. McWhorter has argued creoles form a recognisable structural class; DeGraff has argued that treating them as a class at all is a hangover from colonial linguistics. I cannot adjudicate that, and I will not pretend the recurrence is fully explained.

Third, the substrate is not silent. Where one substrate language dominated, its patterns show through — the Haitian case has been argued in detail as Fongbe semantics relexified with French forms. So the picture is not children generating grammar from nothing; it is children resolving what the input left undetermined, with the substrate biasing which resolution wins.

The structure was never smuggled in from a hidden source. It came from an asymmetry in transmission: adults faithfully reproduce inconsistency, children do not, and a system passed through learners who cannot hold inconsistency comes out consistent. That explains where obligation comes from without requiring anyone to invent anything — and it also explains why the strong version of the claim is contested, since wherever adults had long enough to converge on their own, the children's contribution shrinks to whatever was still unsettled when they arrived.
