The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

Why would an animal advertise its own location with bright colour or loud calls?

Being noticed is the last thing a prey animal should want. Yet a poison dart frog is scarlet against green leaf litter, a peacock drags a train that would embarrass a peahen trying to hide, and a gazelle that has spotted a predator sometimes responds by bouncing stiff-legged into the air rather than running. Each of these looks like a straightforward way to die younger. Since none of them has been eliminated, we have almost certainly misunderstood who the signal is for, or what it is doing.

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Start with the audience. We assumed the audience was a predator, and that being seen was the whole effect. But a display has whatever audience can perceive it, and for many conspicuous traits the intended receiver is a mate or a rival. Then the accounting changes: the trait costs survival and buys reproduction, and selection weighs the two against each other. An animal that lives long and never breeds contributes nothing.

That reframes it but does not finish it. Ask the harder question: why should a receiver care about the display at all? Suppose peahens preferred long trains and nothing enforced honesty. Any peacock could grow a long train regardless of his condition, every male would, the trait would stop distinguishing anyone, and preferring it would become pointless. A signal that anyone can produce carries no information. So the interesting problem is not why signals are conspicuous. It is why they stay reliable.

Zahavi's answer in 1975 was that the cost is the point — a signal is believable precisely because it is expensive, and only a high-quality individual can bear the expense. This sounds paradoxical, and was treated as such for years, until Grafen produced a formal model in 1990 showing conditions under which it works at equilibrium. The essential ingredient turns out to be subtler than "expensive": what enforces honesty is that the same display costs a poor-quality individual more than a good one. Equal costs would enforce nothing.

Modern work has revised the picture considerably, and it would be misleading to present the handicap principle as the settled theory of animal signalling — some argue that what Grafen proved is not quite what Zahavi claimed, and that costly waste is neither necessary nor typical. The clearest reason is that another route to honesty exists which involves no waste at all. A red deer stag's roar carries information about his body size because the sound is produced in a vocal tract whose length is set by his skeleton. A small stag cannot fake a large stag's roar, not because faking is expensive but because it is physically unavailable to him. Such signals are called indices, and they are honest for free.

Now go back to the frog, because it is a different case again. Here the receiver is the predator, and the conspicuousness is not a side effect but the message: I am poisonous, and eating me will go badly for you. This works because a predator learns from experience, and learns faster and more durably from a distinctive appearance than from a drab one resembling a hundred edible things. The bright colour makes the lesson memorable. The gazelle then falls into place: stotting appears to tell a coursing predator that this individual is in condition to outrun it, so the hunt is not worth beginning — and field observations of Thomson's gazelles found that hunting dogs abandoned chases of stotting individuals more often. The display is expensive only for a gazelle who cannot back it up.

Think of a small manufacturer offering a ten-year no-questions guarantee. The guarantee itself says nothing a leaflet could not claim. What makes buyers believe it is that a firm making shoddy goods would be bankrupted by honouring it, while a firm making good ones will rarely be called on. The promise is credible because of what it would cost the wrong sort of firm to make.

WHERE IT BREAKS DOWN

A guarantee is enforced by courts and by a buyer who can come back later, whereas nothing in nature enforces a signal except the cost itself — and the analogy misses the honest signals that cost nothing at all, like the stag whose roar simply cannot be produced by a smaller animal.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

Three refinements hold this together.

First, honesty does not require universal honesty, only that cheating stays rare enough that attending to the signal still pays. Harmless hoverflies wear the black-and-yellow of wasps and get the benefit without the sting. Their mimicry does not destroy the system, because as long as most yellow-and-black insects really do sting, a predator that avoids all of them comes out ahead. The signal degrades as mimics become common — which is a testable prediction, not a hand-wave.

Second, the evidence for the classic case is genuinely mixed, and pretending otherwise would be the easy dishonesty here. Some studies of peafowl have found that males with more elaborate trains father offspring that survive better; a seven-year study in Japan found train morphology did not predict mating success at all. The most likely reading is that the train matters in some populations and conditions and not others, which is less satisfying than the textbook version.

Third, aposematism has a genuine puzzle at its start. The very first conspicuous individual in a drab population pays the full cost of being seen while no predator has yet learned anything. Proposed resolutions include the defence evolving first while the animal is still cryptic, warning-coloured individuals clustering with relatives so a predator's lesson protects kin, and predators' innate wariness of unfamiliar prey. Which of these did the work is not settled.

And the exception — the stag whose roar is honest for nothing — is the reminder that cost was always a means to reliability, never the goal itself.
