The question we started with

THE QUESTION #

If every physical event already has a physical cause, what work is left for a mind to do?

You decide to raise your arm, and it rises. Nothing seems more obvious than that the decision did it.

But follow the arm backwards. Muscle fibres contracted because motor neurons fired; those fired because of ion currents; those flowed because of voltages across membranes; and at no point in that chain does a physiologist reach a step where the physical account runs out and something else has to be invoked. If the chain is complete all the way down, where exactly did your decision get in? And if it did get in, what did it push?

Reasoning it through

REASONING #

Let us make the constraint precise before deciding what it costs us. The principle at issue is that every physical event, insofar as it has a cause at all, has a sufficient physical cause. That is causal closure — and note it is a claim about physics being complete, not about minds being unreal. It leaves open, for now, what a mind is.

Why should we accept it? The strongest support is not a proof but a debt owed to conservation laws. Physics says that in a closed system, energy and momentum are conserved — the totals do not change. Now suppose an immaterial mind altered the course of a sodium ion. To change a trajectory is to apply a force; to apply a force through a distance is to do work; work transfers energy. Where would that energy come from? If from nowhere, conservation fails, and it would fail measurably, in the one organ where we look hardest. Descartes located the interaction in the pineal gland, and Elisabeth of Bohemia asked him in 1643 how something unextended could move something extended. Nobody has answered her well since.

There is an ingenious reply worth taking seriously: perhaps the mind does not push but merely steers — redirecting energy that is already there, like a set of points diverting a train without accelerating it. Does that escape? Only partly. Conservation of momentum is a vector law: changing a direction changes momentum just as surely as changing a speed, and something must supply the difference. And even setting that aside, the dynamics of physics do not leave a direction free to be chosen — given the state of a system, the laws already fix how it evolves. The steering reply relocates the problem rather than dissolving it.

So hold three claims together and see what happens. First, closure: physical events have sufficient physical causes. Second, mental causation: your decision really does make your arm rise. Third, that the mental is something over and above the physical. Jaegwon Kim pressed this hard, and the squeeze is clean. If the neural cause was already sufficient, then either the mental cause did nothing, or the arm rising had two independent sufficient causes at once — systematic overdetermination, every time anyone moves, which is a strange thing to believe.

Which of the three would you give up? Watch that each escape route buys relief at a price. Deny closure, and you owe an account of where physics is incomplete and why no experiment has found the gap. Deny mental causation, and you get epiphenomenalism — Huxley's image of consciousness as a steam whistle that accompanies the engine and drives nothing — which is hard to square with the fact that you can talk about your experiences, since talking is a physical event that had to be caused by something. Deny the third claim, and you have said that mental events simply are physical events under another description, in which case there is no competition and nothing was ever excluded.

The honest position is that most philosophers take the third exit, and that closure itself remains a very well-supported empirical generalization rather than a theorem. Its critics — and there are serious ones — argue that the historical record of physiology finding no anomalous forces is weaker evidence than it is usually made to carry.

Imagine auditing a factory's books and finding that every pound of output is fully accounted for by the recorded inputs: materials, wages, power. The ledger balances exactly. Now someone tells you there is also a silent benefactor who quietly contributes to production. You need not doubt his existence to notice the difficulty — if the books already balance without him, his contribution has nowhere to appear.

Clarifying the model

THE MODEL #

The point most often lost is that closure is not the claim that minds do not exist, nor that your decision is illusory. It is a claim about causal competition: there is no vacancy in the physical story for a second, independent cause to fill. That is why the identity route is not a defeat for mental causation but the only route that straightforwardly preserves it. If your deciding just is a certain neural process going on, then the neural process causing the arm to rise and the decision causing the arm to rise are one event described twice, not two claimants for one job.

A second confusion is to reach for quantum indeterminacy as the loophole — the thought that if physics is not deterministic, a mind might tip the outcome without adding energy. Two problems. Conservation laws hold in quantum mechanics too. And the probabilities are themselves fixed by the theory, so a mind that nudged outcomes toward what it wanted would show up as a statistical deviation from those probabilities. It might be a real gap, but it is not a free one, and treating it as the obvious answer overstates a genuinely contested move.

Finally, notice what the argument does not settle at all. It says nothing about why any of this feels like something from the inside. Closure constrains where causes can enter; the question of consciousness itself sits outside its reach.

The pressure on mental causation comes from conservation, not from any prejudice against minds. Once you grant that energy and momentum are conserved, an immaterial cause has no way to make a difference without leaving a measurable trace — and none has been found.

That turns a question about consciousness into a question about bookkeeping, and the least costly answer is not that your decision does nothing, but that it was never a separate entry in the first place.
